Fun Fair

on

This has been a great weekend. It’s been a pretty varied one. It started with a funeral and concluded with the most amazing birthday party. I’ve seen lots of old friends and made a few news ones. It’s been wonderfully sunny, and it’s also pissed it down with rain (nicely timed to coordinate with the point at which I was in the middle of a field. On a horse. With no coat). I’ve finished the intensive phase of my treatment, and I’ve therefore also come to the end of the ‘no one expects you to turn up to work every day’ phase. Three people I know have told me this week that they’ve been diagnosed with cancer. In all three cases, it’s been caught early, and it’s curable.

So, stretching the fairground analogy to its limits, I’ve done a bit of quick reflection on the past few days, and concluded that life’s a bit of a roller coaster. There are plenty of bumps along the way – sometimes accidental, and sometimes people are driving their little cars straight at you on purpose. Sometimes, like a helterskelter, you can go round and round in circles, only to end up back where you started. But it’s a lot of fun on the way down. And then you just pick up your sack, and start climbing the stairs for another go.

Things can be scary, but having people with you makes a big difference. No one goes on the ghost train alone. I’ve had a load of fabulous people in the carriages behind me, so now it’s my turn to ride along with someone else. And I know where some of the skeletons and ghosts pop up, so I might even be able to give them a bit of warning.

But now, I guess I’d better get ready for work. As I’m lucky enough to have absolutely no excuse not to.
